Lake Tahoe was partially formed about two million years ago by a volcano from Mt. Pluto which is now extinct. Although the partial volcano is no longer in existenct, magma is still present deep underneath the lake. During the ice ages, glaciers formed the different canyons on the California side which includes Emerald Bay, Fallen Leaf Lake, and Cascade Lake.
The Washoe Tribe named Tahoe - DA ow a ga. Because of the constant mispronuncian of the first two word, DA ow, this is how it became Tahoe. There are a lot of superstitions surrounding Tahoe.
Growing up in Tahoe since I was born, I enjoyed swimming from my grandparents house which was right on the shoreline (water) in Incline Village on the Nevada side. And then skiing in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in the winter. Enjoyed hiking all around the lake on the different trails like Mt. Rose and Mt. Tallac. My dad always had a boat and all of us kids would love speeding around and jumping in to cool off right in the middle of the lake.
